In 1969, I was a worker/student at the MIT Geophysics lab. A post doc there invited me to go with him to measure ocean floor temperatures off the coast of Peru. I could not go but I read the results in that the ocean floor at that time was very warm, warmer than the ocean water. Their conclusion then was that el nino was not a climate generated temperature but rather a geothermal caused event. It would be good if that research could be found and posted.

There are a lot of thermal vents around the Galapogas Islands the resulting warmer water from which could be carried to the Ecuador-Peruvian boundary by oceanic counter currents. (the Cromwell current)

I’m guessing that farmers can get a huge pay out, either from an insurance policy or government help, if their crops are destroyed by a wildfire and are responsible for starting some of them. They’ll probably burn fields full of grass then claim they’d been planted with a high value crop to maximise the pay out.
