This season has produced just 2 named storms, looking at the pre 2002 standard of naming storms. There was no first one because that lasted only 12 hours-which would never been given a name before 2002. The third one also would not have been named because it only lasted for less than 24 hours-a weak system in the central Atlantic that dissipated less than a day after it formed. The way they changed the standard of naming tropical cyclones since 2002 is nothing less than lunacy! In addition, the US East coast has NOT had any major hurricane landfalls in over 30 years now. Fran of 1996 was the last cat 3 that hit North Carolina. Everything else has been a few cat 1’s and a couple of sideswiping cat 2’s. It’s a total joke! We don’t get them anymore – the patterns have changed, with most of them either curving out to sea, or weaker at landfall. Due to a colder atmosphere now has allowed more troughs to move further south than usual in the Eastern US and Western Atlantic, shoving most systems out to sea. In addition to that, there have been more TUTT features dominating the Atlantic basins since 1996 as the climate has continued to cool. Along with the cold phase of the AMO now in place for the next 30 years makes hurricanes even less likely.
